SMOKE IN THE BUILDING: CENTRAL PLAZA

Friday, June 20, 2008

Just after 19:00 hours Central Village units were dispatched to a report of smoke in the building at the Central Plaza on E. main Street.  ET-197 responded on the run with six (6) members.  First arriving Assistant Chief Irons (C-297) reported nothing showing from the exterior of a 1-1/2 story ordinary construction.  Further investigation revealed a moderate smoke condition in the Subway Sandwich Shop.  Employees believed the furnace had malfunctioned, producing the smoke.  Upon arrival the crew ET-197 split to accomplish all of the needed tasks.  One group conducted a thorough search of the establishment and adjacent businesses, while the other crew initiated ventilation and air monitoring.  It was determined smoke from outdoor grilling entered Subway's A/C unit and was distributed throughout the shop by way of the ductwork.  After certifying the atmosphere, employees were allowed to re-enter the building.  Central Village units cleared the scene by 20:00 hours.
