ROLLOVER INJURES ONE

Sunday, June 28, 2009 - Shortly before 20:30 hours QV dispatched Central Village units to E. Shepard Hill Road behind the Plainfield High School for a vehicle rollover with injuries.  ET-197 and ET-297 both responded with combined staffing of nine (9).  Chief LaPierre (C-97) was the first officer to reach the scene and reported a one (1) vehicle rollover with one (1) occupant self-extricated and suffering from minor injuries.  Once on scene, Central Village crews split with half controlling hazards, and the balance rendering medical care.  The patient was transferred to Moosup-Plainfield Ambulance personnel and transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.  Station 97 units held the scene with the Plainfield Police until 21:10.

RESCUE-ENGINE POPS A DOOR ON E. MAIN STREET

Monday, June 22, 2009 - At 08:48 hours Central Village units were dispatched to the area of 57 E. Main Street for a vehicle accident with injuries.  ET-197 and S-197 responded on the run with combined staffing of five.  Chief LaPierre (C-97) arrived on scene and reported a two (2) vehicle accident with one (1) involved operator requiring minor extrication.  The Central Village crew immediately stabilized the vehicle, initiated patient care, and removed the driver's door to allow access for awaiting ambulance personnel.  The driver was safely removed from the vehicle and transported to an area hospital.  The operator of the other vehicle refused medical attention.  Central Village units held the scene until 09:30 assisting the Plainfield Police with traffic control.

WORKING STRIP MALL FIRE IN PLAINFIELD

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 - Shortly after 03:30 hours the Plainfield Fire Department along with a first alarm assignment was dispatched to a working restaurant fire in a strip mall on Norwich Road in their first due.  Companies filling out the assignment were Central Village, Moosup, and a FAST response from Atwood Hose.  ET-197 and ET-297 responded with combined staffing of 10 members.  Plainfield Deputy Chief Holcomb (C-195) was the first officer on scene and confirmed an active fire in a 50' x 250' single-story strip mall.  ET-197 arrived as the third piece on scene behind Plainfield's ET-195 & ET-295.  Upon arrival the fire involvement was concentrated in an end-of-the-row restaurant.  Immediate action had to be taken because of the plaza's common-attic space which would allow for rapid fire spread to the four (4) other adjoining businesses.  The crew from ET-197 deployed their 200' attack line and entered a pizza parlor adjacent to the involved restaurant.  As the Central Village crew pushed into the building they were joined by the crew of Moosup's L-194.  Interior crews located and extinguished a large amount of fire in the attic portion of the structure above the wall separating the restaurant and pizza parlor.  After the bulk of the fire was knocked down, personnel engaged in a thorough overhaul and checked all areas of the plaza for extension.  While overhauling, additional pockets of fire were located in the flat roofing material of the building.  Central Village units assisted on scene until 06:30 hours before being released.  Plainfield Fire Marshal Paul Yellen and State Police Fire Marshals remained on scene throughout the day determining the cause of the incident.

QUICK ACTION MINIMIZES FIRST DUE STRUCTURE FIRE

Tuesday, May 19, 2009 - At 21:47 hours the Central Village Fire Co. along with a first alarm assignment was dispatched to Putnam Road in the first due for a reported structure fire.  The balance of the companies dispatched were Moosup, Plainfield for HT-195 & TW-195, and a FAST response from Atwood Hose.     ET-197 and ET-297 responded on the run with combined staffing of 10 members.  Central Village Deputy Chief Irons (C-197) reached the scene within minutes and confirmed a fire condition from the "B" / "C" corner of a 2-1/2 wood-frame dwelling.  As units were responding, Deputy Chief Irons was able to keep the fire in check with a pressurized water can and confirmed the residence had been evacuated.  Chief LaPierre (C-97) arrived and held all responding mutual aid in place.  Crews from ET-197 & ET-297 quickly extinguished the remaining fire and began opening up.  After establishing "Central Village Command," Chief LaPierre requested Moosup L-194 to the scene and dismissed the balance of the assignment.  Central Village and Moosup crews finished overhauling the fire area and thoroughly checked the residence for any further extension.  All units returned to service shortly after 23:00 hours.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

CENTRAL VILLAGE ON EARLY MORNING MOOSUP DUPLEX

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 - Just after 04:00 hours a first alarm assignment was dispatched for heavy smoke from a 2-1/2 story duplex-style dwelling in the Union Village section of Moosup.  Companies filling out the assignment were Central Village, Atwood Hose, Plainfield for ET-295, and a RIT response from Danielson.  ET-197 and ET-297 both responded on the run.  ET-197 arrived as the first mutual aid engine, and their crew was directed to deploy an additional attack line to assist L-194's crew already working inside the building.  Despite an aggressive interior attack, the balloon-frame construction of the dwelling allowed fire to quickly spread throughout.  Interior crews were evacuated and a defensive operation was mounted to bring the fire under control.  Central Village remained on scene until 08:00 hours before being released.

CVFD RUNS BLACK HILL ROAD MVA

Sunday, February 22, 2009 - Shortly before 19:30 hours this evening QV dispatched Central Village units to the area of 185 Black Hill Road for a vehicle accident with injuries.  ET-197 and R-197 responded with combined staffing of five (5).  Fire company units arrived on scene to find a pick-up truck well off of the eastbound shoulder of Black Hill Road into a heavily wooded area.  The single occupant of the vehicle was self-extricated and tended to by Moosup-Plainfield Ambulance personnel.  The crews from ET-197 and
R-197 controlled hazards associated with the vehicle and assisted the Plainfield Police with traffic.  The Central Village assignment cleared the scene and returned to service around 20:45 hours.

PICK-UP TRUCK v. HOUSE ON PUTNAM ROAD

Saturday, February 14, 2009 -  At 14:45 hours Central Village units were dispatched to the area of Putnam Road and E. Shepard Hill Road for a report of a vehicle into a house with injuries.  ET-197 responded on the run with a crew of six (6).  First arriving company officers found a pick-up that had veered off the southbound lane of Putnam Road and struck both a parked vehicle and a residence.  The crew from ET-197 was split to facilitate patient care and the mitigation of hazards on scene.  A thorough investigation of the residence revealed no structural damage which was confirmed by the town's building inspector that was summoned to the scene.  The lone occupant of the vehicle also refused medical attention.  Central Village Fire units held the scene to assist the Plainfield Police with traffic until 15:30 hours.

CENTRAL VILLAGE ON CANTERBURY STRUCTURE FIRE

Saturday, January 31, 2009 - Shortly after 20:00 hours QV Dispatch alerted Central Village units of a mutual aid structure fire assignment to Kinne Road in Canterbury.  Personnel and apparatus from Canterbury were clearing a vehicle accident in their local when QV advised them of reports of a well-involved trailer home on Kinne Road.  Canterbury units were on scene within minutes to confirm the 911 callers' reports.  Additional companies filling out the first alarm assignment were Scotland, Plainfield for ET-295, and a FAST response from Moosup.  ET-197 and ET-297 both responded on the run.  Upon arrival, Canterbury Chief Kasacek (C-93) assigned the Central Village crew to overhaul the remains of the dwelling while Canterbury personnel continued with extinguishment efforts.  Both pieces of Central Village apparatus assisted with maintaining a constant water supply on scene.  Chief Kasacek held Central Village units on scene until 22:30 hours before being returned to service.

HEAVY FIRE FROM PLAINFIELD HOUSE

Friday, January 23, 2009 - At 12:44 this afternoon the Plainfield Fire Department along with mutual aid from Central Village, Moosup, and the Atwood Hose FAST Team were dispatched to a reported structure fire on Lathrop Road in Plainfield.  ET-197 and ET-297 both responded on the run.  Moosup Deputy Chief Yellen (C-194) was the first officer to reach the scene and reported smoke from the rear of a two (2) story wood-frame dwelling.  As apparatus arrived, heavy fire began issuing from the upper-level of the structure.  ET-197 was the second engine on scene, and dropped a line at the base of  the steep driveway to lay in.  ET-297 picked up the line to initiate water supply efforts for ET-195, L-194, and ET-197 which were positioned near the residence.  Crews from Plainfield, Central Village, and Moosup initially attempted an interior attack, but were pushed back by the rapidly growing intensity of the fire.  Within 10 minutes of firefighters reaching the scene, all portions of the first and second floor were involved in fire. Crews knocked down the majority of fire from the exterior and moved back in to complete the balance of the extinguishment.  Firefighters also worked off of Moosup's L-194 to overhaul remaining portions of the roof.  The Central Village assignment was held on scene until 17:00 hours before being released.  The local fire marshal worked with the state fire marshal's office well into the night to process the scene and determine the fire's cause.
