CENTRAL
& PLAINFIELD HANDLE I-395 HAZ-MAT
Tuesday, January 19, 2010
- At 18:30 hours QVEC alerted the Central
Village and Plainfield Fire Departments of a diesel fuel spill second to
a non-injury accident involving a tractor trailer unit on Interstate-395
southbound near Exit 88. ET-197 and ET-297 responded on the run
with combined staffing of eight (8). Central Village Chief
LaPierre (C-97) was the first officer to reach the scene and reported
one (1) tractor trailer unit into the center flex-beam. Further
investigation revealed the only hazard to be an active diesel leak from
the driver's-side 140 gallon saddle-tank. The contents of the
trailer was found to be paper-goods. Central
Village and Plainfield personnel worked together to dike, dam, and
divert the leaking fuel away from a nearby storm drain. Less than
30 minutes after the time of dispatch the entire quantity of diesel had leaked from the
saddle-tank due to the size and location of the rupture. Connecticut DEP Haz-Mat Officials responded with
additional absorbent materials, and made the necessary arrangements with
an environmental clean-up company. All personnel and apparatus
remained committed during an investigation by the State Police and
vehicle removal. Central Village units returned to service shortly
before midnight.

BACK TO PLAINFIELD FOR ANOTHER HOUSE
Sunday, December 6, 2009
- At 05:46 hours QV Dispatch began receiving
reports of a house fire on Oakwood Boulevard in Plainfield. The
first-alarm assignment was transmitted for the Plainfield Fire
Department. Mutual aid companies filling out the assignment were
Central Village, Moosup, and a FAST response from Atwood Hose.
ET-197 responded on the run with a crew of four (4). ET-195 under
the direction of Plainfield Deputy Chief Holcomb (C-195) was the first
unit to reach the scene, and reported fire self-venting from the "A" &
"D" sides of a 2-1/2 story wood-frame dwelling. ET-195's crew
quickly placed two (2) hand-lines into operation initiating fire attack
on lower level of the building. ET-197 was the first-arriving
mutual aid piece, and that crew took a third line through an "A" door to
the upper level preventing any further vertical fire spread.
Within 10 minutes all visible fire was knocked down. The crew from
Moosup's L-194 assisted Plainfield and Central Village crews with
opening up and overhauling. One (1) occupant of the residence who
had evacuated prior to the fire department's arrival was transported to
an area hospital for smoke inhalation. Plainfield Command released
all mutual aid units by 07:00 hours. The incident remains under
investigation by the Plainfield Fire Marshal's Office.

FIRE SHOWING FROM PLAINFIELD DUPLEX
Monday, November 2, 2009
- At 10:40 hours this morning Quinebaug Valley
Emergency Communications began taking calls reporting a duplex fire on
Sixth Street in Plainfield. The dispatch center quickly struck a
first-alarm assignment for the Plainfield Fire Department. Mutual
aid companies on the assignment were Central Village, Moosup, and a FAST
response from Atwood Hose. ET-197 under the direction of Chief
LaPierre (C-97) responded on the run. Moosup Deputy Chief Yellen
(C-194) was the first officer to reach the scene and reported fire
self-venting from three (3) windows on the first floor of two-story wood
frame duplex. Crews from Central Village and Moosup deployed two
(2) 1-3/4" attack lines off of ET-195 through the right-hand unit "A"
door. One (1) line knocked down the bulk of the fire on the first
floor in the "A - D" corner while the second line was brought to the
second floor cutting off any further vertical fire spread. The
balloon-frame construction of the dwelling did allow fire to break out
in a room on the "A - D" corner of the second floor and in the attic
space immediately above. Central Village and Moosup members
quickly opened up allowing for extinguishment of all fire on the upper
portions of the building. The Atwood Hose RIT crew was ordered to
split to accomplish needed vertical and horizontal ventilation.
Personnel from Jewett City were called to the scene to assist with
overhaul efforts while Canterbury's E-193 stood-by at Station 95.
The Central Village assignment remained on scene until 12:30 hours
before being released. The incident remains under investigation by
the Plainfield Fire Marshal's Office.

CENTRAL VILLAGE ON PLAINFIELD'S
1st FIRE OF HEATING SEASON
Friday, October 16,
2009 -
With cold weather starting to take hold of the New England states,
and households forced to resort to various methods of heating, the
likelihood for fire activity naturally increases. Early this
morning at 00:52 hours the Plainfield Fire Department along with a
first-alarm assignment was dispatched to a possible structure fire
on Norwich Road in their first-due. Companies filling out the
assignment were Central Village, Moosup, and a FAST response from
Atwood Hose. Central Village's ET-197 & ET-297 were both on
the road minutes after dispatch with combined staffing of nine (9).
First arriving ET-195 under the direction of Plainfield Chief
Hutchinson (C-95), reported a working fire in a two-story wood frame
dwelling and established The Plainfield Command.
ET-197 was the first mutual aid piece to arrive, and their crew was
immediately assigned to fire attack assisting ET-195. One
1-3/4" attack line was deployed through a first floor "B" door while
a second line was placed into operation on the second floor.
Central Village and Plainfield crews located and extinguished the
bulk of the fire burning in walls adjacent to a woodstove in the
kitchen-area of the residence. Central Village and Plainfield
members operating on the second floor made their way to the area
above the fire cutting off any further vertical extension.
Outside-vent operations were accomplished by Moosup's L-194 crew.
Central Village and Moosup crews assisted Plainfield with overhaul
and property conservation measures until shortly before 03:00 hours.
The incident remains under investigation by the Plainfield Fire
Marshal's Office.

3rd FIRE IN 6 DAYS -
CVFD FAST PUT TO WORK IN WAUREGAN
Saturday, August 1, 2009
- At 11:26
hours QV dispatched the Atwood Hose Fire Co. along with a first-alarm
assignment to a reported house fire on Green Hollow Road in their first
due. Companies filling out the assignment were Moosup, Mortlake,
and a FAST response from Central Village. First arriving Central
Village Deputy Chief Irons (C-197) reported smoke from the eaves of a
2-1/2 story wood frame dwelling. Next arriving Atwood Hose Chief
Charles Colli established the Atwood Command. ET-196 was
the first engine on scene and deployed a 1-3/4" attack line through a
basement door on the "A" side of the building. That crew located
and extinguished a moderate fire condition on the basement level.
The ET-196 crew then attempted to access the first floor by way of the
basement stairs however they were already burned through. As this
was occurring, Central Village and Moosup members put a second line into
operation on the first floor through a kitchen door on the "B" side.
This crew quickly located and extinguished the balance of the fire
stopping any further vertical extension. All companies worked
together opening up and overhauling. The Central Village
assignment assisted on scene until 13:00 hours before being released.

SECOND FIRE OF THE DAY IS A FIRST
DUE BASEMENT
Monday, July 27, 2009 -
Shortly after
13:00 hours Central Village Fire units along with a first-alarm
assignment were dispatched to Pickett Road in the first due for a
reported structure fire. Mutual aid companies filling out the
assignment were Moosup, Plainfield for TW-195 and HT-195, and a FAST
response from Atwood Hose. Moosup Deputy Chief Yellen (C-194) was the
first officer to reach the scene and reported smoke from the eaves of a
two (2) story wood frame dwelling. Further investigation revealed an
active basement fire extending to the first floor. ET-197 arrived
minutes after the alarm. Their crew stretched a 1-3/4” attack line into
the first floor from the “B” side to prevent any further vertical fire
spread. A second attack line off of ET-197 manned by Central Village
and Moosup members was advanced into the basement through a bulkhead on
the “D” side. Both lines worked simultaneously to extinguish moderate
fire conditions on both levels of the residence. All visible fire was
knocked down within fifteen (15) minutes allowing crews to open up and
overhaul. Mutual aid pieces began clearing by 14:00 hours while Central
Village crews held the scene until shortly after 15:15 hours. Chief LaPierre (C-97) had the Central Village Command.
